Swym Customer Showcases – Featuring Garibaldi General

Be creative, and find new ways to succeed

The shift toward “green fashion” is steadily becoming the fashion industry’s new trend. At Swym, we love being associated with e-commerce brands that are on a mission toward building an eco-friendly tomorrow. And so, we are proud to feature one more of our favorite stores – Garibaldi General, who we believe nail that delightful balance between super-cool style and sustainability, with their wooden products. Their collection of wood watches, wooden sunglasses, Mala beads and phone covers are an ideal match for any conscientious adventurer. Notice the minimalism in design – in not only their products, but also their site navigation and aesthetics in general. The design philosophy is inspired by the splendor of mother nature herself, making sustainable wooden products a great fit for any outdoor enthusiast.

An Interview with Darryl H. – Director of Sales & Marketing, Garibaldi General

Tell us about your business – your mission and what made you start this e-commerce website?

Garibaldi General was founded on the principle of “Sustainable Style”. Our goal is to bring eco-friendly fashion items to the mainstream. Our wood watches, sunglasses, Mala beads and phone cases are all produced with this in mind. In addition, we also believe that reforestation is key for sustaining life as we know it on our planet. With every order placed on our website, we will plant a tree to ensure that any wood we use in our products is completely offset by the new tree planted.

Which channels are bringing most traffic to your store? Which channels do you wish to use to reach more customers this year?

We have found good success with Reddit surprisingly. Many retailers are afraid of using this channel, as Redditors are generally not too responsive to advertising. However, if you find the right audience it can be very worthwhile. The key is to make sure you are bringing value to the table through fostering people’s interests, instead of promoting products as a sales pitch. Apart from Reddit, we are also aggressively building our Instagram following; the engagement rates on that channel are amazing. It’s free and when it’s done right, it brings a fair amount of traffic to our website.

What made you choose Shopify for Garibaldi General? How is it helping you accomplish your business goals?

The Shopify platform is (from what we have seen), the most scalable/flexible platform out there. The administrator interface is top notch, and the sheer volume of helpful apps makes Shopify a winner in the marketplace. There are free and cheaper options out there, but for us – Shopify makes sense.

What is it that Garibaldi General (as a business) wants to accomplish in 2017?

We are still a small business and our goal is to plant as many trees as we can this year (which of course also relates directly to our sales numbers). Ideally we’d like to be planting 1000 trees per month by the end of 2017.

What tools, apps, key metrics do you track and use to understand your business’ health? What apps do you use to help you with your backend?

Primarily, we are using Google Analytics to track our day to day visitors and conversion rates, it is by far the most detailed and helpful system we’ve used – and it’s free. Focusing on where the traffic is coming from, what the bounce rates look like for those channels, and what marketing campaigns are profitable is key to making good decisions.

Some of the other apps we really like that help us track and automate our business are GhostMonitor by Recart (for cart abandonment emails) and Tracking & Delivery Updates by Aftership, which has a nice clean tracking interface for our customers. Recomailer by Wordsense is also a really cool app for following up with our customers by email, and pushing for that next sale.

We love sharing more information about e-commerce best practices that we come across, with our customers. Would you have any cool trick or best practice that you recommend?

Read constantly, learn new ways to market your business and test, test, test to see what works and what doesn’t. Knowledge is key, especially when you don’t have a huge marketing budget for your business. Be creative and find new ways to succeed.
