The latest in our series is Lost in Samsara – a Shopify e-commerce website that offers unique products made by artisans from all over the globe, countries like Nepal, Cambodia, Ghana, Indonesia etc. Their aim is to initiate positive change within communities with social entrepreneurship – offering their customers a way to make a difference with every purchase. The awesome folks at Lost in Samsara hand-pick partners who are fair-trade certified, and who work tirelessly with the most disadvantaged people by providing them with vocational training and fair wages. Their fun and cool collection of up-cycled products talks volumes of the idea and the thought that Lost in Samsara has put into building a successful and sustainable business around a social mission.

An Interview with Marvi – Co-Founder, Lost in Samsara


Tell us about your business – your mission and what made you start this e-commerce website?

Lost in Samsara is an ethical company that aims to empower artisans and communities through fair trade. It is born to bring to the market a selection of accessories that respect both people and the environment, with the idea of promoting slow-production systems and trade over charity. The reason why we have started this e-commerce website is because we wanted to have a platform to showcase our products and to share our partner’s work and stories.

Which channels are bringing most traffic to your store? Which channels do you wish to use to reach more customers this year?

We use mostly use Instagram and Facebook as they make it easier for us to showcase both our products and the artisans’ stories. Instagram will be the channel we will be focusing on this year as it is the one bringing us more traffic.

What made you choose Shopify for Lost in Samsara? How is it helping you accomplish your business goals?

We choose Shopify for its simplicity and because, among all platforms, it is the one that allows us to express ourselves the most. It is also the platform that offers more integrations with other apps.

What is it that Lost in Samsara (as a business) wants to accomplish in 2017?

As a small business that recently started, we would like to grow more so that we could provide more work to the artisans and projects we support.

What tools, apps, key metrics do you track and use to understand your business’ health? What apps do you use to help you with your backend?

We use Google Analytics as it offers the most complete tools to study our business. We also analyse the reports offered by Shopify itself.  We use a variety of apps from the Shopify app store. We use Swym for the Wishlist; the Consistent cart, the Reward program by Swell,  Instagram shop by Snapppt, Trustbadge and Return Magic.

We love sharing more information about e-commerce best practices that we come across, with our customers. Would you have any cool trick or best practice that you recommend?

Something that really worked for us is using the pop-up to subscribe to our newsletter that also offers a discount. The discount has been basically used by all our first customers and our newsletter list has been growing a lot allowing us to keep in contact with our customers and to keep sharing our work with them.
