One of the best things about our work at Swym is the opportunity we get everyday to work with some very cool brands that all have an amazing purpose that defines them. In this edition of the Swym Customer Showcase, we are proud to feature Little Hippie, a brand that is more than a clothing line. Little Hippie is a lifestyle, a movement to foster creativity, and to nurture the magic inside all of us. Their unique clothing designs are inspired by love for music – perfectly crafted for those little munchkins and young adults, who are on their way to become adventurers, explorers, dreamers and creators. We love the gleeful colors of their artsy products and the carefully, yet crisply drafted product descriptions. Their product collection including (but not limiting to) kids clothing and home accessories, can be a conversation piece no matter the audience you are with.

An Interview with Carole Berthiaume – Operations Manager, Little Hippie


Tell us about your business – your mission and what made you start this e-commerce website?

Little Hippie was born in October of 2002 when our founder, Taylor Swope, who was just 24 at the time, made seven heat pressed baby t’s on her tiny kitchen counter in her 550 sq ft apartment in New York City. Shortly after starting the business, Taylor became an official licensee for the Grateful Dead in early 2004 and began to infuse their iconic imagery with her own animated artistic personality.

Having spent over a decade traveling the US building the business out of the van she lived in, when she wasn’t in her mini apartment in NYC, Taylor knows first hand what it means to live life on your own terms.  An independent business woman when few others were, Taylor encountered countless obstacles along her path, choosing at each turn to face the challenges and fortify the business. While her peers chose traditional paths in secure professions, Taylor was driven by a mission to be a part of the generation that thought differently. Both a bit ahead of its time and timeless, Little Hippie is the manifestation of a belief that if you put more love out in to the world, good things will come of it.

Our switch over to Shopify has helped our business grow by leaps and bounds. Having a fully functional e-commerce website that is seamless between various devices has been invaluable to our recent growth. Today, Taylor and Little Hippie are nearing their 15th anniversary as a company and the future is getting brighter every day!

Which channels are bringing most traffic to your store? Which channels do you wish to use to reach more customers this year?

After years of vending at music festivals all over the country, we have been blessed with a very loyal fan base that has grown through the years through word of mouth and our physical presence at these events. In 2016, we decided to decrease the number of festivals and focus our energies on new opportunities. Facebook has been our #1 channel for customer traffic. With a following of almost 100,000 people, we are so grateful for our Facebook community and their support of our business.

This coming year, we are excited to focus more attention on growing our Instagram and Twitter community. We absolutely love being in touch with our customers on a personal level and engaging them in topics beyond retail purchases. It really helps guide our moves for the future.

What made you choose Shopify for Little Hippie? How is it helping you accomplish your business goals?

Our previous website was a good one and we were content with it for a few years. But, there were some aspects we felt could be improved. We had developed a wishlist of things we hoped we could find on a new platform. We signed up for a free trial with Shopify just to see what was out there and we have not turned back since! The ease of setting up and running the website and the clarity of articles within the Help Center have been amazing! The majority of our “wishlist” bullet points have become a reality through the use of Shopify. Our mobile sales have skyrocketed and the apps that help us sync up multiple sales channels all into one interface are such a blessing! We are getting more accomplished in less time and the results are tremendous!

What is it that Little Hippie (as a business) wants to accomplish in 2017?

2017 is going to be huge for Little Hippie! We are currently working on new licensing contracts with some unbelievable companies/artists (soon to be revealed!). We are looking forward to rapid business growth this year while running a smooth ship thanks to all the new bells and whistles we have found on Shopify!

What tools, apps, key metrics do you track and use to understand your business’ health? What apps do you use to help you with your backend?

Knowing where our website traffic is originating from is very important to us.  Google Analytics is our best friend for stats, but we also track our Shopify reports consistently for top search keywords among other valuable metrics. The Swym Wishlist Plus app is our new found wonder! Being mainly a children’s clothing line, we are looking forward to utilizing Wishlists to help parents develop baby registries.

The Consistent Cart app helps us learn what items people are interested in and are adding to their shopping carts as well as helping our customers keep a consistent shopping cart across all their devices. SEO Doctor has given us excellent tools and tips for staying on top of the challenges behind maintaining quality SEO within our website. And we could not live without ShipStation! It has forever changed the world of shipping for us and we will never go without it again!

We love sharing more information about e-commerce best practices that we come across, with our customers. Would you have any cool trick or best practice that you recommend?

Customer service is KEY! We would not be where we are today without every single purchase we have had in the past. To us, a purchase is not just a cha-ching (although we do love hearing those fun cha-ching noises Shopify!), a purchase is a show of support for our art and our mission to empower children to help build a better future for the world. We treat every customer service opportunity as a chance to connect on a personal level with our customers, or, as we prefer to call them, our Little Hippie family!. Treat them well and they will treat you the same for years to come!
